A Note from the Director

Welcome to The Aviary

Directing the debut performances of The Aviary has been an absolute joy, and I couldn’t be prouder of the extraordinary team who has brought this bold, beautiful play to life.

When Jamie first handed us this script, we knew we were holding something special and wonderfully demanding. Jamie has crafted a world that is as sharp as it is enchanting. It is a place populated by bird-people trapped in their “bedroom-cages”, desperately singing for validation in their personal “bluelight spotlights”. It is a biting, laugh-out-loud satire of our digital age, but at its heart lies a quiet, aching human tragedy.

Inhabiting the Parapara Tree

Staging a play with such high-velocity and rhythmic prose required our cast to pour heart, humour, and immense physical courage into every single second on stage. To bring this stylised world to life, the ensemble had to operate as a single entity - embodying a community caught in the sticky, beautiful leaves of the “parapara tree”. They had to navigate the delicate balance between fast-paced comedy and the devastating vulnerability of characters who have “filled their bones with the things they can’t say”.

Behind the scenes, our phenomenal tech and design team has woven it all together with imagination and precision. They turned the very theatre into a cage, perfectly capturing the voyeuristic, “thumb-swipe” energy of the script.

From Frimley to the National Stage

The competitive journey of this production has surpassed our wildest dreams. Winning Best New Comedy at Maidenhead Drama Festival was a great start. But then sweeping the board at the Henley Drama Festival was thrilling. And finally coming second at Welwyn Drama Festival, widely regarded as one of the fiercest competitions on the drama festival circuit, was a wonderful affirmation of everyone’s hard work. Across the festivals we’ve taken home trophies for Best Director, Best Actress (for Megan), Best New Play and Best Stage Presentation alongside nominations for Best Actor (Liam), and Best Actress (Becky), proved that our boundary-pushing, experimental piece of theatre had truly found its wings.

Now, we face our biggest adventure yet. Out of more than 50 qualifying groups and award-winning productions put forward across the country this season, The Aviary has been officially selected for the National Drama Festival. We head to the national stage with excitement, gratitude, and a real sense of awe at how boldly we’ve taken flight from the branches of the parapara tree.

Our Homecoming

But before we travel to the finals, we wanted to bring this story back to where it belongs.

Frimley will always be the home and heart of Brightlight Theatre. This is the community that has supported our wildest creative risks, cheered us on through every rehearsal, and watched us grow. We are both proud and deeply honoured to be able to present this production of The Aviary here for you tonight.

Thank you for sitting in the dark with us, swiping aside the curtains, and letting us perform our song for you. Enjoy the show.

The Story

About the play

In the cul-de-sac of The Aviary, the bird-people residents are trapped in the branches of the Parapara - a bird-catcher tree, whose sweet seeds and sticky sap bind its captives. Over the course of a single day, a peacock preens for invisible followers, a messenger bird trades in gossip, an ostrich drowns in a flood she refuses to acknowledge, and a timid parrot edges toward the cage door. A choral verse-play in the tradition of Under Milk Wood, The Aviary is a dark comedy about performance, paralysis, and the trap that sings us to sleep.

I started writing The Aviary after we returned from the National Drama Festival in 2025. We’d been for the first time and were thoroughly inspired by everything we saw. I wanted to create a piece that embraced everything I love about theatre. Not realism, but theatricality. A world where language could sing, where movement carried meaning, where comedy could sit comfortably alongside melancholy, and where the audience were invited to lean in and join the game.

The play draws inspiration from the rich, poetic storytelling of Under Milk Wood, but rather than looking backwards, I wanted to explore the traps of our modern world. Our flock of birds navigate a society shaped by performance, conformity and constant connection, asking questions about identity, belonging and the stories we tell ourselves, all wrapped in an eccentric, playful and sometimes surreal theatrical experience.

Writing The Aviary was only the beginning. What has brought it to life has been the extraordinary imagination of Judy, our cast and creative team, whose inventiveness, courage and generosity have transformed words on a page into something far greater than I could ever have imagined. Whatever you take away from tonight’s performance, I hope you’ll leave having laughed, wondered, and perhaps looked at the world - and each other - a little differently.

Only you, and a million other followers, can swipe aside the picture-perfect bedroom-cage-curtains... and peer within.

Drama has always been a constant for me, even when other parts of my life have been ever-changing. This love was first ignited at a very young age after performing in the West End and continued well into school and college where I became part of our resident theatre company. I have been at Brightlight for over a decade and each year has stretched and challenged my skill and ability - it has been the greatest pleasure to have been part of our festival team every year for the past 6 years. We have gone from strength to strength and that is testament to our family feel and determination.

Previous Brightlight shows include: Songkeeper, Unhanging, Skitterling, Murdered To Death, Don't Dress for Dinner, The 39 Steps

I guess I have always enjoyed drama. There are photos of me when I was about 7 years old playing the Turkey in Lewis Carroll's the Owl and the Pussycat. I did GCSE drama, and then I guess other things took a priority in life and I didn't act again for a while after that. It was about 12 years ago that a friend of mine suggested I join Brightlight Theatre Group, and I haven’t looked back since. I have enjoyed playing some meaty roles such as Torvald in a Doll's House and Charles in Blythe Spirit. I'm very lucky that Brightlight is such a lovely group of people and we have great fun doing what we do.

I have always loved performing and being creative but as a kid there were more opportunities for musicals and singing is not in my wheelhouse. I was both delighted and nervous to step back on stage with Brightlight Theatre in 2022. My last performance had been 14 years prior during A-level Performing Arts! Brightlight are a fantastic group of talented, warm and welcoming people. I have taken on classic parts like Gwendolyn Fairfax and Elvira Conodomine, had a go at interchanging 3-character (and 3-accent!) monologues in Jamie's Murder! at Mistletoe Manor, and even dabbled in some directing. After all that, The Aviary is something special. I was desperate to be in a festival play and to try my hand at something more contemporary. The play really challenges us to consider our relationships with social media and how we engage with the world around us. Underneath the absurdism, I think the cast and our audiences connect because we can see a little of ourselves in a lot of the play's characters. It's been daunting but also a fun, creative and rewarding process. I was honoured by my Best Actress nomination at Welwyn Drama Festival and only wish we could keep performing it.

I have enjoyed acting from a young age when I did youth theatre from age 7. I joined Brightlight in 2014 and have taken part in many shows, I love the camaraderie and friendly atmosphere. I have loved being a part of this production, it’s safe to say it’s been the most challenging role I have ever undertaken, but by far the most rewarding. I hope you enjoy the show.

While studying at Hatfield Polytechnic, I joined the drama society and quickly discovered a love of performing on stage, despite being a natural introvert. Apart from the occasional church sketch, I hadn't acted for many years before joining Brightlight Theatre in 2019. My wife, Alison, and I were looking for a hobby we could enjoy together. After seeing a friend perform in one of Brightlight's excellent Christmas productions, we decided to take the plunge and sign up. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to be cast in many productions, with The Aviary being my sixteenth. I can honestly say this has been the most enjoyable show I've ever rehearsed, developed, and performed. I hope you enjoy watching it just as much as we've enjoyed bringing it to life.

Previous Brightlight shows include: Farndale Murder Mystery, The Edge of Darkness, The Importance of Being Earnest, Holly & Ivy, Murder! At Mistletoe Manor

Some people laugh in the face of danger. I think Brightlight Theatre poke danger in the eye and steal its car.

Directing a festival show

Festival performances are very different from a normal production run. As a director, what's the biggest challenge in getting a show competition-ready?

Festival performances demand precision: tight transitions, adaptable technical elements, and performances that can immediately draw an audience into the play’s lyrical world despite limited setup time and unfamiliar spaces. For us, the real task was preserving the delicacy and atmosphere that defined The Aviary while shaping it into a version that was lean, portable, and sharp enough to thrive in the fast‑paced rhythm of the festival circuit.

What have been the standout moments for you while directing The Aviary?

Honestly, the highlights have come in waves. Watching Jamie Lakritz’s script spring to life in the rehearsal room was extraordinary — every time the cast discovered a new rhythm or unearthed a fresh nuance in the world of the Aviary, the play seemed to breathe a little deeper. Seeing the ensemble grow braver, sharper and more connected with each run has been a privilege, and our tech team’s creativity has stitched the whole world together with such flair that it often felt like magic. Winning the Henley Drama Festival and placing as runner up at Welwyn were unforgettable moments of validation, but the real joy has been helping give voice to the sharp, vital messages woven throughout this remarkable script.

After winning at Henley and coming second at Welwyn, what are you asking the company to focus on as you prepare for the National Drama Festival?

After winning at Henley and securing a strong second place at Welwyn, we are focusing on sharpening the emotional precision and ensemble cohesion that make The Aviary resonate. The aim is to refine the subtle character dynamics, tighten pacing, and elevate the physical storytelling so every moment lands with clarity and impact. With Nationals ahead, the priority is building consistency, deepening the cast’s connection to the material, and ensuring the production feels both polished and boldly alive.

For us, the real task was preserving the delicacy and atmosphere that defined The Aviary.

Preparing for the National Drama Festival

The Aviary has already had an incredible festival run. How are you preparing to make sure your performance feels just as fresh and truthful at the National Drama Festival?

The trick is never stop exploring the text! Even when you think you've squeezed every last drop out of it, something else pours out and keeps the cast laughing!

Without giving too much away, is there a particular moment in the show that you're especially excited for a new audience to experience?

Have you ever considered what it might be like to have a boxing smackdown with your colleagues?

You were at the National Drama Festival with Brightlight last year. How does it feel returning this time with The Aviary, and what are you most looking forward to?

It was an honour and privilege to be invited to the NDF for the very first time last year and that feeling has certainly returned again this year - it is even more exciting because this piece is such a contrast to the quiet tension of Songkeeper - it's off-the-wall style and tongue-in-cheek delivery make it such a joy to perform every single time!

The trick is never stop exploring the text!
